Overview

If you ever get Unreadable Content in Startup.xlsm, it most likely is due to have Visual Basic for Application not installed.

How to confirm if Microsoft Visual Basic for Application is installed

To confirm if Microsoft Visual Basic for Application is installed, follow these steps.

  1. Start Excel
  2. Go to File \ Options
  3. Select Customize Ribbon
  4. Tick the Developer ribbon
  5. Click OK to close the options dialogue
  6. Select the Developer tab
  7. Confirm if the Microsoft Visual Basic and Macros buttons are both greyed out.

If the Visual Basic button is greyed out, Microsoft Visual Basic for application is not installed. You will need to repair/reinstall/modify Microsoft Office to include it as per the images shown.
