Structuring Notes
This is the troubleshooting hub page.
The existing troubleshooting hub page is Troubleshooting but it is incomplete and/or refers to the How to Guides which were to be removed (as per our discussion).
The great majority of pages on the wiki are troubleshooting pages - but how to organise them?
Existing Hub Pages
There are presently some existing troubleshooting hub pages:
- Troubleshooting Get Data Problems: Existing hub page with 5+ sub topics.
- Troubleshooting Get Data Problems with MYOB AccountRight Classic: Existing hub page with 4+ sub topics.
- Troubleshooting Get Data Problems with MYOB AccountRight Live: Existing hub page.
- Troubleshooting Start-Up Problems: Existing hub page. Operational, not configuration.
- Troubleshooting Auto Upload Problems
- Troubleshooting Excel Problems
- Troubleshooting the MYOB ODBC driver
In reality, quite a number of the troubleshooting pages will belong to more than one category (e.g Troubleshooting the MYOB ODBC driver is an installation topic, but it is also MYOB AccountRight v. 19 or lower specific.
CONSIDERATIONS
This troubleshooting page is the main hub, linked from the home page.
There initially appeared to be only two options:
- Keep this page short (with no specific content links) so that it acts as a feeder page out to sub-hubs by topic, but if the page was also linked on the topic hub page, this would create duplication by increasing the number of pages that needed to be updated when new content was added.
- Just link everything here, by topic. That would suit your instructions as this would be a single place for future updates to be linked. On the other hand, this page would be quite large and possibly unwieldy.
However, the logical solution seems to be to create detailed categories. The links from here could be to the category pages, and each page could/would have multiple categories, as needed. Therefore content creators would only need to chose categories when adding new content and not have to worry about linking the page in all the appropriate places.
For example, take one of the Auto Upload pages: it might have the categories (Features, Auto Upload, Troubleshooting: Auto Upload) and thus appear in all relevant places without needed to be individually linked.
Problem: links on the category pages won't appear in any meaningful order. This could be resolved by page naming with a prefix? But that would mean page names have to be changed...
Possible answer: Sort key [Media Wiki Help]
The category page is just like any other page and content can be added above the categories. Can this be adapted to create hub pages? So... Troubleshooting: Auto Upload is not a standalone page, it's a category page??? At what level would this take effect?
How to arrange/structure categories? Each category would be a breadcrumb level and each page would build upon the last :)
